YAWL is based on the well-known Workflow Patterns initiative and provides comprehensive support for these patterns.
YAWL uses concepts from Workflow Nets, which are derived from Petri Nets, and extends these with support for concepts such as cancellation, or-join and multiple instances.
There are a number of ways to seek support for the use of the YAWL environment. In addition, it may be possible to contribute to its enhancements.

Research
It is imperative that complex long-lasting processes can be checked before deployment.
Exceptions cannot always be foreseen and occur naturally in the course of a running process. They give rise to important learning experiences.
Processes can exhibit complex behaviour and design time insights, e.g. wrt cost, time and resource utilisation, can be acquired through simulation.
Modern BPM environments should support configuration of reference models depending on the context in which they are to be deployed.
